How to Multitask Productively

Multitasking is a useful skill not only in the workplace, but in an academic setting as well.  Being able to multitask cuts down on the severity of the work at hand, also allowing your brain to revamp and refresh itself during a new task.  Students are currently pushed to take on more work than ever, making multitasking seemingly priceless.  Not all multitasking may go as planned, so using solid and steadfast tips to avoid failures of any kind are necessary.

What Should I Do?

Shift between jobs.  Do not solely focus on just two pieces of work; try doing bits of several things at once.  Many students find that shifting assignments every thirty minutes helps maximize the overall production of their work.  Doing the required reading for thirty minutes, then shifting over to their psychology assignment, and following up with a bit of their calculus often helps keep their mind fresh and the workload seem less daunting.  On the same note, do not switch over if you are doing well.  If you feel your assignment is working, and your attention is still full throttle, keep going.  By doing so, you will accomplish more of one assignment, enhancing your overall peace of mind.

Time management is applicable for multitasking at all times.  Being sure you do not spend too much or too little time on an assignment is severely important.  When allocating the time you will be using to complete assignments whether written or reading, be sure to put together two differing assignments; for instance one that takes more concentration with one that takes less.  This will balance out the workload so you can complete both tasks in the time you have given yourself.

Take advantage of travel time.  Often time’s students use the bus or train to reach their homes or campus.  Take advantage of this time by studying, reading, or even doing some writing.  This will not only aid in affective time management skill, but allows students to accomplish more in seemingly small amounts of time.  Every minute counts, so try to not waste one!
It is always possible to do more than one task at a time.  Simultaneous tasking is efficient, productive, and a great skill to have for the work force.  It allows for many things to be accomplished in a short amount of time, and in a manner consistent with the quality necessary.
