Revising Your Essay

Your essay is completed and now you can turn it in.  Wrong.  Your work is still yet to be completed.  The writing process is just as much about revising as it is about the actual writing.  Being sure to carefully and efficiently revise and edit your essay will ensure that your work is given the time and attention it deserves.  A much more challenging process than hitting a simple spell check button, the overall revision of your work will help you make positive changes to the essay and focus on what truly counts.

Where to Begin

First, reread your paper once through.  Be sure that every bit of information throughout that paper supports the thesis.  If there are any sections that have gone off topic, flag them so you can revise them.  No matter how much you may like that sentence, paragraph, or fact, if it does not fit then it simply will not work with your paper.

The overall read of your paper should have a natural flow about it.  If when your paper switches topics it does not sound natural, this needs to be fixed.  The connection has to be clear to the reader; there cannot be any missing sections or bits of information.  Act as if you are writing this for somebody who is new to the subject matter, this will help you in being clear and concise in with the information.  Clarity is important, and try to not generalize the details.

Organization is the key to success, so be sure that your paper is organized in a fashion that is acceptable.  Do not sporadically discuss information from the first paragraph in the fourth.  Keep all of your information, opinions, and thoughts in the same location, this provides with an easy going read.  Not only does this happen, but in ensures the reader will not become confused during the course of the read.
Just as the revising is about the content, the grammar and spelling should be closely watched as well.  Be careful for tricky things such as homophones and grammar mistakes.  They are common and papers never come out perfect the first go around.  Avoid a passive voice, and be sure that you use proper verbs.

With these few, simple revision techniques, your paper will be on its way to perfection.  A little bit of hard work and dedication in the revision process will go a long way, and the results will be amiable
