Time Management Skills for University Students

University students all learn quickly that time management skills are necessary in surviving their academic adventures.  It will prove to be extremely difficult and challenging at first, but adjusting and planning out your schedule during your time at university will be a useful and priceless tool in ensuring your success.  Well-developed time management skills are an important part of one’s academic and professional careers.  Time management is something a majority of students struggle with.  Approaching your schedule differently may be the key to managing your time and schedules properly.

Tips for Management

Write everything down in a calendar.  Having a reference point for all of your scheduling needs is extremely important.  This medium of organizations allows you to schedule everything from eating and sleeping, to doing homework and studying, along with laundry and showering.  Planning and mapping out every aspect of your life is necessary in order to manage your time properly.  The more crazy your schedule gets, the more stress you will feel, and having this calendar will alleviate any unnecessary and unwanted stress.  With everything going on, do not neglect to schedule in time to relax and time for yourself!

Plan ahead.  You surely know just about how much time you will need to complete a research paper, so be sure to plan accordingly.  Do not schedule too little time to complete this assignment: the reaseraching, the outlining, the writing, and then the revision.  Each of these steps is crucial to the paper, so factoring them in when scheduling a time is necessary.  If you can, schedule them on separate days to give your brain a breather between the writing and the revision process.  This will allow you to take on your paper with new thoughts and ideas in mind.

No matter how much you attempt to plan things so they work out properly, something always goes wrong at one point or another.  Be sure you have scheduled in a manner that allows for flexibility.  You do not want to miss out on the social aspect of university, so being sure you have flexibly scheduled your life accordingly will provide you with the necessary time to focus on your studies as well as ample time to participate in the social gatherings, parties, and events happening with your friends and on campus.

In the End

Reward yourself.  No schedule should go unrewarded.  After midterms and the stress of being completing your assignments combined with the pressure of preparing is over, reward yourself.  Have a nice night out with some friends, eat some dinner, and relax knowing you have nothing left on your calendar to plan for!
